Dewdney Trunk General Store History
The store still exists and operates to this day. Located in Dewdney, B.C. you will find it nestled along Hwy #7 approximately 8 km east of Mission, British Columbia. Built in 1904 by Mr. McIntyre, this structure originally faced the railroad tracks and stood next to the long demolished Dewdney Station. It is unknown when the additions were added to the main structure but it would have been after they raised the banks up in the surrounding areas along the Fraser River to contain flooding of the Fraser Valley. In 1948, the Great Flood of the Fraser River had the store almost completely under water. The flood had covered 50,000 acres of land and wiped out all roadways and rail service until the water subsided.
There was a steam powered paddle wheel passenger ferry that ran on the Fraser River and would come into Dewdney on a regular schedule bringing customers to the store to buy their goods.
Today, the Canadian Pacific Railway has a double main line that runs literally within only a few meters of the store. This makes a great location for railfanning today, as I am sure it did when steam was King
